In California, CNA certificates must be renewed every two (2) years. You may renew your certificate any time within two (2) years after the expiration date of your certificate
To renew, CNAs must complete:
- complete the renewal application
-
total of 48 hours of Continuing Education (CE) in the last 2 years
-
At least 12 CE hours completed per year
- a maximum of 24 CE hours may earned online
Acceptable CE includes:
-
Online CNA continuing education courses
-
In‑service training at a facility
-
State‑approved CE provider courses with a NAC# noted on the completion certificate
CNAs who do not meet renewal requirements may need to complete additional steps or retest, depending on how long the certificate has been expired.
Career Growth and Next Steps
Becoming a CNA is often the first step toward a long‑term healthcare career. Many CNAs go on to become:
-
Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN)
-
Registered Nurses (RN)
-
Medical Assistants
-
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT)
-
Specialized caregivers in dementia, hospice, or rehabilitation
With experience, CNAs can also move into staffing, education, or leadership roles.
This information applies to CNAs in the state of California, but may apply to other states. See California Department of Public Health for complete and most up to date information.
